But why are more and more farmers choosing this crop? And why is the yellow pea a perfect fit for sustainable and profitable agriculture in Belgium?

1. A crop that matches Belgian soils and rotations

Yellow peas are an ideal rotation crop for Belgian growing conditions. They integrate easily into existing crop plans and contribute to healthier soils.

2. Soil improvement through natural nitrogen fixation

As a legume, the yellow pea naturally binds nitrogen from the air and enriches the soil. This results in: - Reduced need for synthetic fertilizers - Improved soil structure - Increased organic matter levels

3. Reduced Disease Pressure

Adding yellow peas to rotations with grains or maize reduces disease pressure and strengthens the resilience of fields an advantage for farmers working toward regenerative agriculture or CAP objectives.

4. Contract Farming: Market Security

Nuverta offers contract farming, providing farmers with:

  • Guaranteed purchase

  • Pre-agreed prices

  • Agronomic guidance

  • Access to a growing, reliable market

With low cultivation costs and rising demand for local plant-based proteins, yellow peas offer a stable income opportunity.

Local and Sustainable: A Short Value Chain with Impact

Belgium imports most of its plant-based proteins. By cultivating and processing yellow peas locally, we:

  • Reduce dependency on imports

  • Lower CO₂ emissions

  • Strengthen the Belgian agricultural sector

  • Build a transparent, short supply chain
